Community Honors Late Jazz Legend

NEW YORK — A celebration of Dave Brubeck's life and music turned into an ode to joy as family, friends and fans paid tribute to the groundbreaking pianist and composer who became the best known ambassador of jazz to the world.

Brubeck died Dec. 5, a day before his 92nd birthday, and a private funeral was held near his home in Wilton, Conn., shortly afterward. On Saturday afternoon, the only Brubeck family sponsored tribute took place before more than 2,000 people at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine featuring performances by Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Hilary Kole and other jazz stars.

Former President Bill Clinton, in a statement read by Brubeck's longtime manager Russell Gloyd, recalled being "utterly captivated" at age 15 after hearing Brubeck's quartet in concert and then going home to play "Take Five" until his lips gave out. "I consider myself lucky to have known Dave and to have experienced his music in such a profound way," Clinton said.

Iola Brubeck, the pianist's wife of 70 years and lyricist, opened the tribute by acknowledging the hundreds of letters she had received from people throughout the word in the five months since her husband's death.

"I noticed that one word `joy' kept coming into those letters over and over," she said. "They expressed the deep joy his music had brought to their lives. I hope that this afternoon we can capture some of that joy."

Daughter Catherine Brubeck Yaghsizian shared warm memories of how her tired father would return home from a tour and relax by holding a jam session with his growing sons. She'd take part as a toddler by wriggling into a blue tutu her mother had given her and "twirling around trying to dance to the crazy time signatures."

Her dancing inspired her father to write "Kathy's Waltz," which ended up on his double-platinum 1959 album, "Time Out," which experimented with using odd time signatures in jazz. She then introduced her four musician brothers – Darius (piano), Chris (electric bass), Dan (drums) and Michael (cello), who performed "Kathy's Waltz" and would appear in different configurations throughout the program.

Darius Brubeck recalled his father's 1958 State Department tour that he said "inspired a lasting interest in music from other cultures." Alto saxophonist Paul Winter and flutist Deepak Ram then performed Brubeck's "Koto Song" based on a Japanese scale, and later trumpeter Randy Brecker and saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera were the soloists on "The Golden Horn," which used a modal-like theme characteristic of Turkish music.

The most emotional moment came when bassist Eugene Wright, who turns 90 this month and is the last surviving member of the classic Brubeck quartet with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and drummer Joe Morello – took the stage. Host Mark Ruffin of Sirius XM recalled the dignity displayed by the African-American bassist as the Brubeck quartet challenged racial segregation in the 1950s.

Wright performed a duet with Darius Brubeck on "King For A Day," a song written by Dave and Iola Brubeck for Louis Armstrong for their 1962 musical "The Real Ambassadors," which dealt with allegations of hypocrisy for the State Department using jazz musicians as symbols of democracy while the civil rights struggle was raging at home. Brubeck and Wright performed that same tune during a performance at the 1988 Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow, which U.S. diplomats credited with helping break the ice at a tense moment in arms control negotiations.

The audience was also treated to a sneak preview of a recently discovered tape of Tony Bennett and Brubeck performing the standard "There Will Never Be Another You" at a 1962 White House-sponsored concert that will be released on CD this month. Bennett told the audience that on those few occasions he performed with Brubeck, "it was always spontaneous, always unexpected and never to be forgotten."

Other musical highlights included husband-and-wife pianists Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes doing a four-handed version of "The Duke," Brubeck's tribute to mentors Duke Ellington and French composer Darius Milhaud; saxophonist Marsalis tenderly performing the romantic ballad "For Iola"; and pianist Corea doing a solo version of "Strange Meadowlark," a lesser-known tune from the "Time Out" album that Corea recorded with Gary Burton on their Grammy-winning "Hot House" CD.

Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein, whose ties with Brubeck go back to 1952 when he introduced the unknown West Coast band at his Boston jazz club, closed the tribute by noting that Brubeck "had respect for everyone" and thanked Iola Brubeck for giving her husband "the support, love and strength that every great man needs."

Starting in 1955, Brubeck ended up playing the Newport festival more than any other musician, and the celebration ended with trumpeter Jon Faddis and Chris Brubeck on trombone blowing up a storm on "Blues For Newport," a tune Brubeck composed backstage at the festival.

Does Lindsay Want Out Of Rehab Already?

Dina Lohan says her daughter Lindsay is "happy" in rehab at the Betty Ford Center, but other reports claim the troubled starlet already wants to leave.

“I just spoke to Lindsay at Betty Ford. She’s doing great,” Dina told the New York Daily News on Mother's Day about her daughter's progress. “She’s clear, she’s happy, she’s healthy.”

Dina shot down allegations the "Liz & Dick" wants to ditch the Rancho Mirage, Calif., center.

“I don’t know who’s saying that. It’s so evil. Lindsay will do what she has to do," the 50-year-old added. “She just needs to breathe and find out who she is again. And she’s going to stay there and do that.”

Still, TMZ reports Lindsay wants out of Betty Ford because she is reportedly prohibited from taking Adderall while serving her 90-day sentence. (She was previously prescribed Adderall for her Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but doctors at Betty Ford think there are far less addictive medications she can take to alleviate the ADHD symptoms, according to an earlier report.)

The 26-year-old has reportedly found another rehab center to transfer to, but prosecutors won't hear it.

"She had 45 days to find a suitable place," a source told TMZ. "She didn't listen to her people and just did what she wanted so it's her problem now. Not gonna happen."

Before checking in for her sixth rehab stint, Lindsay described her five prior stays as "pointless" and a "joke" in a interview with Piers Morgan.

"I look at it as a good thing," the actress, who insists she isn't an alcoholic, told Morgan in an interview for the Daily Mail. "I can come back afterwards and be fully focused on work. But I think there are other things I could do instead of going to a rehab center that would benefit me more. The best thing they could do for me would be to make me go abroad to different countries and work with children."

In March, Lindsay was sentenced to 90 days in lockdown rehab, 30 days of community service and 18 months of psychotherapy related to charges of reckless driving and lying to the police stemming from a June 2012 car accident.

Jennifer Aniston's Favorite Pre-Wedding Activity

Jennifer Aniston is preparing to say "I do" to fiance Justin Theroux soon, and she's not letting the stress of wedding planning get to her. The 44-year-old star is turning to yoga as a way to combat pre-wedding stress, according to E! Online.

Between filming her latest action flick, set for release in 2014, and preparing for her nuptials, it's been a busy year for Aniston. But despite the many demands in her life, Aniston's yoga practice allows her to stay calm and centered.

"Yoga kind of helps you prepare for everything, honestly," Aniston told E! News. "It's like meditation. It sort of just allows anything that's coming at you at the end of the day to be kind of doable."

Aniston has long been a yoga devotee: She said that the practice "changed her life," and told Marie Claire Australia that she feels off-center when she can't do yoga.

Earlier this month, Aniston stepped out to celebrate the launch of "Yogalosophy: 28 Days To The Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover," written by her friend and yoga instructor Mandy Ingber. The instructor says that yoga helps Aniston maintain a healthy work-life balance.

"Part of why Jennifer looks so awesome is her balance. She's a balance of having strength, being toned, and being lean -- beautiful but natural," Ingber told Shape Magazine of working with the star. "She works hard, but you also see her taking care of herself. She's a career woman and a relationship person.”

PHOTOS: Hayden And Wladimir Play In Florida

"Nashville" star Hayden Panettiere is back in a bikini again, this time with boyfriend Wladimir Klitschko on Miami Beach, Fla., over Mother's Day weekend. The 23-year-old actress showed off her body in a purple bandeau bikini with tassels while the 37-year-old Ukrainian boxer (and rumored fiancé) splashed along in the waters with her.

Panettiere recently relocated to Nashville, Tenn., to film her hit ABC drama series, which was renewed for a second season. In an interview with New York magazine, Panettiere -- who once released a musical album of her own -- revealed that playing the character of country pop star Juliette Barnes wasn't as natural a fit as it may have seemed.

"Performing live has always terrified me. Stages have always terrified me. They never used to when I was little. But when you grow up in the spotlight, and you're constantly reading things that are awful about you ... it sticks with you," she said.

The Rumors Persist

Could Beyonce be pregnant with bey-by No. 2? Quite possibly, if you ask the Internet. Probably not, if you ask Beyonce.

Rumors started running rampant this morning when several blogs speculated that Bey's belted dress at the Met Gala last week hinted at a baby bump.

The New York Post's Page Six picked those up, writing "Bey wore a Givenchy gown with a high, belted waist that carefully camouflaged her midsection, but pictures have emerged on blogs of what looks like a baby bump from recent tour dates."

To fuel these rumors, many media outlets relied on Beyonce's recent statements regarding children.

Back in January, Beyonce spoke about wanting a brother or sister for Blue Ivy on "Good Morning America," cites Vanity Fair. Earlier this month, the singer spoke to ABC News saying, "I would like more children. I think my daughter needs some company. I definitely love being a big sister. At some point ... when it's supposed to happen."

But rumors are one thing and reality is another.

Queen Bey is traveling the world these days with "The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour," and is set to do so until August 5. A source told People magazine that even if a little brother or sister for Blue Ivy is an option, the famous couple hasn't started working on it just yet.

"Beyonce and Jay-Z are planning for another baby after her tour is over and things calm down just a bit," People quotes.

Beyonce's reps have not responded to The Huffington Post's request for comment.

This is hardly the first time the 31-year-old musical phenom has had to deal with rumors like these. Since Bey married Jay in 2008, she had to deal with pregnancy speculations and even when she was pregnant, she had to deal with surrogacy rumors.

In 2010, Tina Knowles shut down pregnancy rumors on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and on "Access Hollywood Live." "No, it's not true right now. It's gonna happen when it's time… but not right now," she said in October of that year.

A month later, Beyonce herself addressed the persistent rumors. "At this point, they say that I've been pregnant like eight times, so I am kind of used to it," she said in an interview with the Associated Press. "I just hope that one day when I decide to be pregnant that people are happy for me ... One day hopefully I will be. It's part of being a celebrity, I guess."

Almost a year later, in August 2011, Beyonce famously revealed her conspicuous baby bump onstage at the VMAs. And yet, the rumor mill just kept on spewing gossip.

While pregnant, the "Single Ladies" diva had to deal with rumors that her pregnancy was fake, that she was carrying around a prosthetic bump, and that she and her husband used a surrogate to bring Blue Ivy to the world. Beyonce has slammed all those rumors after baby Blue Ivy was born January 7, 2012, labeling them "crazy."

"Daft Punk leak!" screamed thousands of tweets on Monday afternoon. It's true: "Random Access Memories," the highly anticipated comeback album from house legends Daft Punk slipped through some cracks and found itself available for a bootleg download.

The version that leaked is a low-quality file -- salt in the wound of the French duo, who spent three years working to bring a warmer, fuller sound back to dance music. For those who either don't know how download the leaked copy or prefer to listen to a higher quality version, iTunes is now streaming the album in full. To access it: Navigate to iTunes' Daft Punk artist page (get there by clicking on their name) and wait for the "Random Access Memories" promo image to appear. Big '50 Shades' Rumor Debunked

Despite reports last week from THR and Variety that Joe Wright was the front-runner to direct the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" adaptation for Universal and Focus Features, Deadline.com's Mike Fleming has shot down the idea with the site's signature "Toldja!" Per Fleming, Wright's schedule "doesn't work" with the "Fifty Shades" time frame; Universal chairman Adam Fogelson told THR back in February that the adaptation of E L James' best-selling S&M novel could arrive in theaters as early as next summer.

"I will tell you that it is an absolute priority for us," Fogelson said.

Fleming initially threw cold water on the trade reports hours after they published on Friday, writing that the news was "bullsh-t." His Monday update on the story noted that film journalists are "spinning rumors based on little more than preliminary conversations." Indeed, they are: Last June, Fleming posted a story about Angelina Jolie's potential involvement as director of the film on Deadline.com with the headline "'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Heating Up With Angelina Jolie Talk."

"I've heard rumors about the possibility of Angelilna Jolie having a conversation or two about directing it," Fleming wrote at the time, before adding that no official negotiations had taken place. THR, for its part, noted that the conversations Jolie had with the studio about "Fifty Shades of Grey" were not necessarily "real."

Wayne Brady To Bill Maher: 'I Will Beat Your Ass In Public'

Even though Wayne Brady respects Bill Maher as a comedian and performer, there's no love lost between the two, thanks to Maher's repeated use of Brady as a punchline about Obama's lack of "black" cred.

Brady spoke about how Maher has characterized him back in July on Aisha Tyler's podcast, and on Monday, he stopped by HuffPost Live and amplified his sentiments, explaining what he apparently has to do to prove his "black man" bona fides to the "Real Time" host. Something tells us Maher wouldn't enjoy it.

Katy Perry sang with Mick Jagger at the Rolling Stones concert in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The 28-year-old singer joined the band on stage for their "50 and Counting" tour and belted out "Beast of Burden" with Jagger, and she seemed pretty pumped about the experience.

After the show, Perry tweeted, "Yes, I just did gyrated on Mick Jagger. WHAT?! #Stones50," and posted a photo of herself with the band:

The Stones have been keeping fans guessing on their "50 and Counting" tour with surprise guests that so far have included Gwen Stefani and Tom Waits.

Don't Call 'Ironside' A Remake

The original "Ironside" may have premiered in 1967, but don't call NBC's new version a remake.

"I tell ya, I never say the word remake because I think it was made once and done brilliantly," Blair Underwood, the star of the 2013 "Ironside," told HuffPost TV at NBC's Upfront presentation. "This is not a remake -- it's a reimagining. I've often said it's like the way George Clooney's Batman is different and Val Kilmer's is different and Christian Bale's. 'Ironside' is a franchise, started here on NBC many years ago."

The original "Ironside" starred Raymond Burr and aired from 1967-1974 on the Peacock network. Both versions follow a police officer who is in a wheelchair after a shooting.

Underwood said it's challenging to do an action role while in a wheelchair. "What's kind of refreshing and unique about our 'Ironside' is that we do have flashbacks," he said. "We do see him often prior to the accident that put him in the wheelchair. That's going to be unique to our version. For me, what's interesting about that is it really informs the character that we're watching. I want to delve into psychologically where is he, emotionally where is he, but it's driven by the case. At the end of the day, it's a cop show."

'Gatsby' Director Debunks Big Leo Rumor

Last week, "The Great Gatsby" director Baz Luhrmann sparked a frenzy of Internet speculation when he reportedly remarked that he'd like to team up with Leonardo DiCaprio on a film adaptation of "Hamlet".

"What else could we possibly do as a follow-up?" he told a red-carpet reporter for The Hollywood Reporter, while cautioning, "It's just a dream at this point."

On Friday, however, Luhrmann told The Huffington Post that his comments had been "misreported."

"Someone said, 'Where does Leonardo go from here?' And I just said, 'After Gatsby, the only way up is Hamlet,'" Luhrmann said. Even then, however, he refused to rule out the possibility of making the film: "Be careful," he said, "one can never say never."

"The Great Gatsby" is Luhrmann's second collaboration with DiCaprio. Their previous effort, 1996's "Romeo + Juliet," has become a cult classic among romantics of a certain stripe.

"The Great Gatsby" grossed just over $50 million in its opening weekend, enough to place No. 2 behind Robert Downey Jr.'s comic-book juggernaut "Iron Man 3."

The critical reception was mixed at best, but audiences gave it an 84 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And Luhrmann seems happy with his star's performance.

"Leonardo's Gatsby, by the way, whatever people are saying, I think few people can argue with the nuance and the revelation of the characterization," Luhrmann told The Huffington Post.

In recent decades, Hollywood actors including Ethan Hawke, Kenneth Branagh and Mel Gibson have tackled the role of Shakespeare's indecisive prince. But to some purists, none has cleared the bar set by Laurence Olivier's 1948 version.

Reporter Congratulates Matthew Perry On 'Go On' Cancellation

Matthew Perry hasn't had the best post-"Friends" TV track record: "Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip," the 2007 Aaron Sorkin drama he starred in, was canceled after a season, as was Perry's 2011 comedy "Mr. Sunshine." Then last week, NBC axed his latest show "Go On" after its first season as well.

Asking an actor about his/her show being canceled -- i.e., losing his/her job -- is definitely a touchy territory, and one perhaps misinformed reporter found the most awkward way to bring up the news of "Go On's" cancellation in an interview with Perry.

While at an L.A. Kings game this weekend, Fox Sports West reporter Dan Moriarty talked to Perry, a longtime Kings fan, and asked about his loyalty to the team and "Go On." "Big news today and congratulations is in order," Moriarty said in the interview (above). A slightly shocked Perry took the comment in stride and replied, "Oh, thank you. You're talking about my show getting canceled ... It was sort of a sad day because of the people and I'm going to miss them ... but, you know, this show that was doing was really getting in the way of some Kings games so I'm OK."

Congratulations to Perry on being such a good sport.

Wayne Brady Says He's 'Not Great In Relationships'

Wayne Brady stopped by HuffPost Live Monday and didn't shy away from touchy topics -- like his love life.

In fact, the Emmy award-winning actor told host Marc Lamont Hill that he's "not great in relationships."

Brady confessed that his focus on the arts takes away from time that could be spent on relationships. "I'm always writing, I'm always creating... I'm not always present," he said. "That sucks, but I've come to understand that about myself. And the way I see it, I have a gorgeous daughter, I have my ex-wife who is my best friend ... so I've got my daughter and I've got my work and so I'm good."

Brady separated from ex-wife Mandie in April 2006 after seven years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in April 2008. The pair have a 10-year-old daughter together.

Lucy Liu: 'I Wish People Wouldn't Just See Me As The Asian Girl Who Beats Everyone Up'

$

We fell in love with Lucy Liu back in 2000 when she was one of Charlie's badass Angels, donning leather suits and romancing Matt LeBlanc.

Since then she's taken on a wide variety of roles, from a crime boss in "Kill Bill" to a publishing executive in the short-lived "Cashmere Mafia" to Dr. Joan Watson in CBS' "Elementary." However, she recently opened up to Net-A-Porter's magazine about how she feels Hollywood still largely knows her by her race, not her work.

She discussed the way she thinks she is looked at versus the way other, successful (white) actresses her age are perceived:

I wish people wouldn't just see me as the Asian girl who beats everyone up, or the Asian girl with no emotion. People see Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock in a romantic comedy, but not me. You add race to it, and it became, 'Well, she's too Asian', or, ‘She's too American’. I kind of got pushed out of both categories. It's a very strange place to be. You're not Asian enough and then you're not American enough, so it gets really frustrating.

In September 2012, before "Elementary" first aired, Liu talked about the backlash she had received for playing a female version of Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Watson with The Huffington Post. "It just takes time for people to understand that the world isn't going to blow up if Watson is a woman," she said.

We think you're great, Lucy Liu. Anyone who can intelligently discuss racism and sexism in Hollywood, and pull off a floor-length floral gown is OK in our book.
