11 Musicians Who Got Caught Tax Evading

$
0
0

Former Fugees vocalist Lauryn Hill is the latest in a long string of musicians who've had to face the music (no pun intended) from the taxman. Hill has been sentenced to spend three months in federal prison for tax evasion despite having paid the nearly $1 million owed to the I.R.S. before she was actually sentenced. The 37 year-old Hill pled guilty last year to three counts of evading taxes and failing to file returns on $1.8 million earned between 2005 and 2007.

While Hill is not the first to have to reconcile an unpaid tax bill, her jail sentence is somewhat of an extreme measure. Once Hill’s sentence in the big clink is wrapped up, she will spend three months on house arrest followed by nine months of supervised release.

Not all musicians who try to evade tax payments end up in jail. But what is certain is this: The taxman will eventually get what is coming to them.

One year after tying the knot, "Biggest Loser" couple Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson are calling it quits.

"It is with great sadness that my marriage to Sam Poueu is ending," Anderson said in a statement to Us Magazine earlier this week. "Thank you in advance for respecting our privacy during this difficult time."

Anderson, who is currently seven months pregnant with her and Poueu's child, met her former flame while both were filming the third season of "The Biggest Loser," which aired in 2010.

Watch the video above for more on this "Biggest Loser" divorce, then click through the slideshow below for eight other celebrity couples who fell victim to the reality TV divorce curse.

Gwyneth Paltrow Serves MAJOR Diss

$

Leave it to Gwyneth Paltrow to crush every fashionista's dream. Upon leaving "The Oscars of Fashion," more commonly known at the Met Gala, Paltrow said she not only hated it but will also never go back.

"I'm never going again. It was so un-fun," the 40-year-old actress told USA Today. "It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all."

What might have contributed to her boiling state was the giant pink tent of a dress she was wearing, an odd choice considering the theme of the night was punk. Or perhaps Paltrow is keen on gaining more haters, since that statement sounds as pretentious to us as that infamous quote from ELLE U.K., "I am who I am. I can't pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year."

The Met Galas are notoriously hard to get tickets to, so we're sure someone will gladly take them off her hands next year (if Anna Wintour ever invites her again, after this comment).

Gwyneth did gush over a fellow attendee though, Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr. "[Miranda] is just so pretty, it’s abnormal," Paltrow -- recently voted "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World" -- told Entertainment Weekly. "I was like, 'Is it weird to be that pretty?' And [Miranda] was like, 'No.'"

Paltrow also explained to USA Today why she and husband Chris Martin, who also attended the event, did not walk the red carpet together, citing their need to keep their relationship "private" as the cause.

Just last week though, Paltrow opened up about her "private" relationship and admitted her marriage to the Coldplay frontman isn't all roses. "It's hard being married," Paltrow told Glamour U.K. "You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We're the same as any couple."

Anna Chlumsky Hasn't Spoken To Macaulay Culkin In 20 Years

E! News caught up with Anna Chlumsky at an event in New York City this week, and the "Veep" star made a very disheartening admission.

Though Chlumsky is 32 and pregnant with her first child, we'll always remember her as Vada Sultenfuss in the 1991 movie "My Girl," and we're totally bummed to learn that she hasn't talked to her co-star Macaulay Culkin "in like 20 years."

We guess we're not really that surprised, since Chlumsky took a lengthy break from acting, deciding to get back in the business only in the last few years, while Culkin was rumored to have a heroin addiction (which his rep vehemently denied), and reportedly just became roommates with Pete Doherty in Paris -- so we can see how they might be unlikely to cross paths.

Still, we would have hoped that they would have kept in touch after all these years since they did share a very memorable moment together. When the pair won the award for Best Kiss at the 1992 MTV Movie awards, Chlumsky joked:

"Gee my first kiss and I get an award."

PHOTOS: Kate Upton Is Top Model On 2012 Maxim Hot 100 List

You would think models -- specifically swimsuit models or lingerie models, who seem to foster a particularly large fan base -- would dominate the top spots of the Maxim Hot 100 list.

Alas, the only model to crack the top ten of the newly-released 2013 Maxim Hot 100 list is America's golden girl Kate Upton. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover star of both 2012 and 2013, Kate ranked No. 8 on Maxim's annual "definitive list of the world's sexiest women." (Miley Cyrus stole the No. 1 spot, in case you were curious -- make of that what you will.)

The folks at Maxim astutely note that Upton's modeling career outside of the swimsuit world has exploded (although they cite Guess and Dooney & Bourke as top gigs, neglecting all thoseVogue shoots...).

But we're under no illusions: Kate makes the list because she rocks a bikini like none other. As proof, see the rest of the models Maxim picked for the big list:

Nina Agdal (No. 70)

Anne Vyalitsyana (No. 68)

Candice Swanepoel (No. 64)

Brooklyn Decker (No. 59)

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (No. 42)

In conclusion: no Heidi Klum, no Tyra Banks, no Gisele, no Adriana Lima, no Erin Heatherton and certainly no fashion folks like Kate Moss or Karlie Kloss. But hey, Selena Gomez scored the No. 2 spot, and Manti Te’o's fake girlfriend managed to make the list. So there's that.

If you're tired of using the Internet to find the best, coolest, hippest places to hang out in a new city, you can now skip Google and take your travel advice from your dear old friend, Gwyneth Paltrow.

"I have always dreamed of finding a city guide that would be just right for me, like a trusted friend whose opinion you knew you could count on," she wrote on her blog when the guides first launched back in late 2011.

The actress-turned-lifestyle guru chatted about her series of travel apps, The Goop City Guides, at an event in New York City earlier this week. Geeksugar.com asked Paltrow why she added travel apps to her already impressive portfolio. She explained, "I love having a place to go to where it’s places that I love and doctors that are amazing, just all that useful information." Useful information, like what to do when there is a situation abroad. She added, "When I moved to England, for example, I didn’t know that if you have an emergency, you don’t dial 911."

The first edition was a City Guide to New York City meant to be a "resource for the tried and tested of the best and coolest of Manhattan." According to USA Today, Paris is the latest city to get some love. You can purchase the app from iTunes for $3.99.

How Rosie O'Donnell Helped Kree Get Her Start

Kree Harrison may be vying to win "American Idol," but the Fox reality competition series is hardly the 22-year-old Texas native's first time at the rodeo.

At the age of eight, Harrison was chosen to perform on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" and Kree impressed the talk show host with her voice and her manners, responding to all her questions with "Yes ma'am." Kree appeared as a guest on the show numerous times by the time she was 12.

During her first apperance, Kree donned a zebra-printed cowboy hat and sang Martina McBride's "A Broken Wing." She adorably told O'Donnell, "I hope to be the youngest country music singer and it'd be such an honor to sing at the Grand Ole Opry."

Kree also appeared in an episode with Joanna "JoJo" Levesque, who became a teen pop sensation with her hit "Leave (Get Out)." Kree sang "Unchained Melody" and, afterwards, she revealed that she got a call from Lyric Street Records. "I tried out for 'em and they loved me so I'm gonna move to Nashville," Kree said, announcing that she got a record deal.

In one of her final appearances on the show, Kree followed O'Donnell favorite Tom Cruise in the guest chair and talked about her track on the Christmas album "No Wrapping Required." "It was the best," she told O'Donnell, who did a duet of "Do You Hear What I Hear" with Kree. After the interview, the tweenaged Kree sang "Mary Did You Know."

Fans of Kree on "American Idol" have tweeted at O'Donnell throughout the show's current twelfth season and the former talk show host wished the now grown-up singer her best on the show.

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

WASHINGTON -- It was one of the most iconic moments in the history of daytime TV: With a shout of "The streak is over!" Susan Lucci, after 19 nominations, won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Fourteen years later, the pale pink dress and bedazzled Manolo Blahnik shoes Lucci wore that night in 1999 are officially part of American history. At a ceremony Thursday to mark a new partnership between the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Lucci's Emmys outfit, along with other artifacts of classic daytime TV, were added to the museum's culture collection.

Other inducted items include memorabilia from "Jeopardy!" and an original "Barney" script.

american history daytime tv

Trebek, who donated "Jeopardy" category cards, a contestants' buzzer, final reveal panels and a 1984 script, told the Los Angeles Times that he had stored the Final Jeopardy question panels, from the original show hosted by Art Fleming, in his garage for years.

On Thursday, Trebek quipped that a quiz show is "the best kind of reality television," and said he's proud to be part of daytime television, home to two of the richest women ever on TV: Oprah Winfrey and Judge Judy. The "Jeopardy" host is expected to retire in 2016.

Kathy Parker, co-creator and composer of "Barney" -- everyone's favorite singing-and-dancing dinosaur -- admitted that when the children's show first aired on PBS in 1992, its creators "had tremendous dreams -- but to be honest, this [having memorabilia collected by the Smithsonian] wasn't on our radar." With her husband, Parker donated a script from the first "Barney" movie and an original VHS tape, plush toy, "Barney" coloring book and fan club flier.

Lucci (who is in talks to return to "All My Children") closed the ceremony with her Emmys dress and shoes, and an original "AMC" script. The soap star said of her famous awards show moment: "When he said my name, I didn't hear it," and admitted that before walking onstage, she whispered to her husband, "Are you sure?"

Lucci also noted that the Manolo Blahniks she donated to the Smithsonian had been worn just one time prior to the Daytime Emmys: appropriately for Washington, to dance at the White House.

It's safe to say that Amanda Bynes is going through a sort of rough patch at the moment, but we recall a time when the actress was just another teenage media sweetheart.

The Nickelodeon alum scored quite a few top knotch covers for up-and-coming fashion figures back in the day, including a coveted Seventeen feature in 2008. Amanda even posed right next to Mary-Kate and Ashley on the cover of Vanity Fair's teen stars issue in 2003 -- proximity to Olsens is always a good sign in the style department.

So just in case your mind has become clouded with scandalous twitpics and unflattering paparazzi snaps, we're going to help you conjure the Amanda of yesteryear.

The Most Stunning Woman To Walk The Runway

$

How often can someone say, "I have been on the cover of over 600 magazines"? Well, if you're the gorgeous Linda Evangelista, then you can. The Canadian beauty has graced the cover of so many glossies that she is famous for uttering the phrase: "We don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day."

Even though that sounds a little snooty, Evangelista stood out among her model contemporaries in the '90s with her sheer devotion to the profession. She didn't just model for the money, she modeled because she really loved fashion.

Evangelista earned her first modeling contract at age 16 with Elite. Interesting story: When she first joined the agency, a photographer told her she should cut her hair short. The famous hairstylist Julien Dy chopped off her locks and she cried, claiming it looked like a "bowl cut with sideburns." But Evangelista's new haircut helped put her on the map. She became one of the most sought-after models, sparking an exclusive contract with L'Oreal Paris.

Her fame and beauty naturally allowed for her to acquire many suitors. She is most famous for dating French football player Fabien Barthez and French billionaire François-Henri Pinault (remember that rocky child support battle?). Regardless of her personal woes, Evangelista still remains one of the most stunning women to ever walk the runway. And we just love ogling over all her great hairstyles throughout the years!

In celebration of Linda Evangelista's 49th birthday on Friday (May 10), we are taking a look back at the supermodel's most iconic fashion moments.

You better, work!

Prince Harry isn't the only celebrity gracing Capitol Hill this week.

Val Kilmer, the actor of "Batman Forever" and "Real Genius" fame, found himself on Capitol Hill on Wednesday -- and took to tweeting everything in sight.

The actor was in Washington making an appearance in favor of the Equitable Access to Care and Health Act, or EACH Act, which would allow people to claim religious exemptions from Obamacare.

Some in D.C. were excited to spot Kilmer around town:

And some people had policy questions:

While others were simply concerned about the change in hairstyle:

Kilmer may be new enough to D.C. that his appearance here creates a stir, but he's no stranger to politics. The former embodiment of Bruce Wayne has a history of environmental activism and flirted with a run at the governor's office in New Mexico in 2010.

Kilmer was spotted eating at at Estadio on Tuesday night, the Washington Post reports.

Keira Knightley's new husband, musician James Righton, gave her a very sweet gift when they tied the knot on Saturday.

Righton gifted his new wife a 100-year-old olive tree he planted in the backyard of their home in France, The Sun reported Thursday. He carved their initials and wedding date into the bark, and presented it to her and their guests at their wedding on Saturday.

The couple married at the town hall in Mazan, France, with just a few witnesses. About 50 to 100 guests celebrated afterwards at their vacation home near Avignon. Knightley wore a short tulle dress, Chanel jacket and ballet flats and Righton wore a navy suit.

Knightley and Righton got engaged in May 2012 after a year of dating.

Prince Harry is in America! WE REPEAT: Prince Harry is in America!

The British royal has finally touched down in the U.S., kicking off his first tour of the country since that infamous Las Vegas scandal. His first stop: Capitol Hill, where he took in an anti-landmine photography exhibition put on by the HALO Trust, an organization of which he is a patron.

The exhibit is located in the Russell Senate Rotunda, a circular space with a balcony that was perfect for some royal sightings. To wit: Dozens of women, presumably Capitol Hill staffer, lined up against the railing with their iPhones in hand, eager for a Harry spotting (and phone pics to make all their friends jealous).

CNN's Max Foster took in the scene:

J.Lo Is Putting Her Divorce On Camera

Jennifer Lopez is taking a cue from Katy Perry.

On Wednesday, the pop star told New York radio host Elvis Duran that her upcoming 3D concert movie will touch on her split from estranged husband Marc Anthony.

"I'd been through a big change in my life with the divorce and everything, and as crazy as we are we thought let's put that on camera!" she told Duran (via MTV UK).

In August 2012, Lopez's manager Benny Medina first revealed to "Extra" that the singer was shooting footage for a 3D concert movie called "Dance Again" -- the same name as her hit song with Pitbull and the title of her 2012 world tour.

Lopez appears to be following in the footsteps of Perry, who released a concert movie -- "Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D" -- in July 2012 that chronicled her "California Dreams" tour and divorce from British comedian Russell Brand.

Lopez and Anthony -- who are parents to 5-year-old twins -- first announced their split in July 2011. Anthony filed for divorce the following year in April 2012. Since the split, Lopez, 43, has been been dating 26-year-old choreographer and "Dance Again" creative director Casper Smart.

Celebrity Commencement Speakers 2013

As much as we're looking forward to hearing what current and former presidents, major CEOs and acclaimed journalists have to say this graduation season, let's be honest: The celebrity commencement speeches are the ones everyone will be talking about.

Consider that last year actress Jane Lynch talked about porn and "Newsroom" writer Aaron Sorkin told grads, "You are dumb." And at Princeton, Steve Carrell championed the character-building of humiliation and rejection.

Elsewhere Andy Samberg's speech at Harvard's Class Day was pretty legendary, giving Will Ferrell's amazing speech at the Ivy League school's 2003 event a run for its money.

So the question is simply, which of the folks below is going to come out with the line that gets everybody talking?

Check out the lineup in the slideshow below:

So Long, 'Southland'

"Southland" has been canceled.

TNT has decided not to pick up the cop drama, starring Benjamin McKenzie, Shawn Hatosy and Regina King, for a sixth season.

"TNT has made the difficult decision not to renew 'Southland' for another season," the network said in a statement. "We are enormously proud of 'Southland,' which stands as one of the best police dramas ever made ... We also want to thank the amazing cast for their impassioned, no-holds-barred performances, and the production team for their tenacity shooting on the streets of real-world Los Angeles. We wish everyone associated with 'Southland' the very best.

Hatosy and McKenzie tweeted to "Southland" fans mourning the end of the show:

"Southland" had previously been canceled on NBC shortly before its second season was set to air, but TNT picked up the rights to the show and has been airing the LAPD-centric series ever since.

Fans started to worry about the fate of "Southland" when McKenzie and Hatosy both signed on for second-position pilots (i.e. if "Southland" didn't get renewed for a sixth season, they each had a pilot gig lined up).

McKenzie tweeted in March to pacify "Southland's" worried and vocal fanbase:

King shed some more light on the possibility of "Southland" Season 6 in an interview with TVLine soon thereafter. “Of course we want it to come back,” King said. “But there are just certain things that [make us think], ‘Are we?’ No one’s told us that we weren’t, but there are enough things that haven’t happened [like promotional support] to question, ‘Are we?’” King admitted, "It could go either way."

The Season 5 finale of "Southland" ended with quite the cliffhanger: Is John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) dead? We may never know, but there is good news for "Southland" fans currently mourning the cancellation: TV Guide Magazine's Michael Schneider reported via Twitter that there is still the possibility of "a 2-hour wrap-up #Southland movie."

In addition to "Southland," TNT also canceled the freshman medical drama "Monday Mornings" from David E. Kelley. Sister network TBS picked up two new series: the Bill Lawrence comedy "Ground Floor" and a reality show for Cee Lo Green called "The CeeLo Life "

Julie Andrews To Grads: 'Stand Up For Those Who Can't Stand'

$

0

Legendary actress Julie Andrews bid a warm adieu to more than 6,000 University of Colorado graduates this morning, invoking references to her beloved movies and telling the Class of 2013 to "live lightly on this Earth and give generously."

"Use your knowledge, and your heart, to stand up for those who can't stand, speak for those who can't speak, be a beacon of light for those whose lives have become dark," Andrews told the graduates and their friends and family members assembled at Folsom Field.

CU awarded 6,084 degrees this morning -- including 4,687 bachelor's degrees, 903 master's degrees, 171 law degrees and 494 doctoral degrees.

Among them was graduating senior Liz Notary, who decorated her graduation cap with

space stickers -- including a NASA logo to represent her long-term career goal.

This afternoon, Notary will be commissioned as an officer and will begin her journey in the Air Force working as an engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio.

"This degree," she said, gently tugging on her orange graduation cord, symbolizing her engineering degree. "It's the hardest thing I've ever worked for in my life."

The Senior Class Council broke from an informal tradition of inviting only those with close CU ties to be the speaker and courted Andrews, the Academy Award-winning actress who starred in "The Sound of Music," "Mary Poppins" and "The Princess Diaries."

Andrews gripped the attention of her audience in the football stadium, immediately charming the crowd when she greeted them by saying: "Hello Buffalo people."

She told them she started Thursday evening on Pearl Street and "kissed the buffalo," a time-honored rite of passage for CU students. She ended her night at The Sink on University Hill, the same restaurant that President Barack Obama visited during his first trip to Boulder in April 2012.

She also made a Ralphie the Buffalo reference.

"I think I should be careful

Click on any photo to see full gallery

referring to Ralphie as a 'he,' because, as I understand it, Ralphie is really a she playing a he, right? Which pleases me. Because in 'Victor Victoria' -- for those of you who have not seen the movie or the musical -- I played a character that was a she playing a he who was playing a she.

"Clearly, Ralphie and I can relate."

'Food for the soul'

Andrews encouraged the students to be life-long learners and to engage in not just random acts of kindness, but also planned ones.

"Be a part of all that is decent and be an ambassador for the kind of world that you want to live in," she said.

To help make her point that graduates should "go out and learn something" when faced with adversity, Andrews

shared a personal anecdote about a botched throat operation that caused her to lose her singing voice.

At the time, she was writing a children's book with her daughter.

"I was bemoaning my fate and she said, 'Mom, you've simply found a new way of using your voice,'" Andrews recalled. "Suddenly, the weight of sadness fell from my shoulders and I embraced this new learning experience wholeheartedly."

Since then, Andrews and her daughter have together written 30 children's books.

Andrews also made an endearing pitch for the arts during her speech.

"Wherever your path takes you, make the arts a meaningful part of your life in some way. Honestly, they are food for the soul. They revitalize us. They transport us. Inspires us. Shape us. Humble us. They connect us worldwide in ways that nothing else can."

'You blink and it's over'

Prior to the ceremony, graduates this morning lined up on Norlin Quad -- a final gathering place before they scatter on different career or graduate school paths. Preliminary results from a senior survey show that about 54 percent of graduates expect full-time employment to be their principal activity after graduation and 15 percent expect part-time work. Other plans include graduate school, military service, traveling and volunteering.

Many students decorated the tops of their caps to stand out in the crowd, using their mortar boards to give shout-outs to their moms and dads.

Journalism graduate Kenzie Knop wrote out a fitting Jack Kerouac quote atop her cap: "Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road."

After graduation, she's hoping to land a job at a magazine or newspaper.

"I'll be happy as long as I'm writing," she said.

Rob Van Gulick, a graduating senior in integrative physiology, is planning to go on to graduate school in a physician's assistant program.

"The last four years have gone by so quick," he said. "You blink and it's over."
